Abstract

Dry slag granulation has a significant potential to reduce the energy consumption of the iron and steel industry. It is generally agreed today that the centrifugal atomisation of liquid blast furnace slag represents a possibility to recover the heat from high-temperature blast furnace slag and to produce a saleable material for the cement industry. Furthermore, blast furnace slag is the most valuable potential resource of energy recovery in the iron and steel industry. In this thesis a measurable quality characteristic to force the process of dry slag granulation that has been missing so far was developed. For that purpose a spinning disk was planned, constructed and operated. Based on the experiments that were carried out an evaluation/validation of a qualitative and quantitative process description in terms of an interactive image processing system was possible. The results indicated that the droplet size is a measurable quality characteristic for the ligament formation process. Based on the findings, the implementation of the analysis method as a control variable in an industrial pilot plant is arranged.
