Abstract

The hot working tool steel W360 from company Böhler has been tested in to show if it can reach the requested static strength and fatigue limit of steel NC310YW Material from Aubert&Duval for motorsport application. The NC310YW is the standard material for high loaded drivetrain parts. It is a solid - solution hardened steel which is partially carburized. The most important properties for motorsport applications are an ultimate yield strength of at least 2000MPa, a elongination of at least 8% and a fatigue limit of at least 1000MPa at unnotched, rotating bending samples. The most important influence on the properties of these materials is the heat treatment. In the present work the ultimate yield strength has been tested on fully heat - treated samples. The Wöhler curves have been determined using samples with different heat treatments. The material W360 in annealed condition has a higher fatigue limit than NC310YW in the annealed condition. Depending on the chosen heat treatment an increase of the fatigue strength can be reached with both materials.
