Screw presses with forming forces of several thousand tons underlie, in their use as forging aggregates, a large number of process and environmental influences. Nevertheless, in order to ensure the quality of the products, they must strictly adhere to the defined processes and forging parameters. For this reason, these influencing variables were examined on different components and measures derived. At the beginning of this thesis the focus was set on an improved understanding of the function of large-scale forming equipment, in particular clutch-controlled screw presses, their characteristics and construction types. An important component, which is crucial for the power transmission of clutch-controlled screw presses, is the friction clutch. Therefore, the most important principles of solid state friction and the function of force transmission based on this, as well as the behavior and influencing variables on the used friction linings were discussed. Additionally, some attention was turned on possibilities of using machine data in the present and future of manufacturing technology. In the first step of the practical part of the thesis possible influencing variables on maximum press force were systematically recorded and evaluated in a cause- and effect diagram. The possible influencing variables were investigated on the basis of large, ring-shaped engine disks, which showed one of the highest variations in maximum press forces. This was done by evaluating the process data recorded during the forming process. From the data analysis, it could be demonstrated that the part-specific curve of the forming force may influence the behavior of the slipping clutch and therefore the maximum press force. Low ram speeds in connection with a high forming energy demand lead to flat force-stroke curves due to the speed drop of the screw press, which worsen the repeatability of the opening point of the clutch. As a method to detect this behavior at an early stage, a direct rotational speed measurement at the flywheel was set up. This should enable the monitoring of the speed curve during the forming process. In addition, a simple methodology has been developed to predict the energy demand and related drop in flywheel speed during the manufacture of ring-shaped engine disks.
