Abstract

Tin sulfide is one of the essential components for the production of brake pads. It protects the brake disk, which is made of cast iron, against corrosion. Instead of tin sulfide there other metalsulfides can also be chosen, but PbS or Sb2S3 are toxic and by means of new EUdirectives it is not allowed to use these materials any more. The most established manufacturing technique for SnS is the autonomous, exothermic reaction of tin- and sulphur-powder. After solidification the SnS-powder is manufactured by milling- and sieving-processes. Furthermore SnS-powder can be fabricated by mechanical fusion or by wet-chemical techniques. There the SnS precipitate from an acidic tin-solution as soon as the solution is neutralized. A potential of tin sulfide-production exhibits the atomization of liquid SnS via inert gas. By the reaction of sulfur with liquid tin in a melting furnace the melt is synthesized. Due to the economy of a couple of processing steps via SnS-atomization, this way of powder production seems most innovative. Additionally the exploitation of the exothermic synthesis of SnS decreases the energy demand.
