In the future, domestic iron ore from the Styrian Erzberg is intended to be reduced using hydrogen. Only the reduced ore shall be processed in order to enrich iron and discard slag forming minerals. Since this is not an established process, there is limited experience with processing the reduced ore. The available samples were reduced in a size range 100% <6.3 mm at two different levels of temperature. In order to elaborate the degree of metallization the method of multidimensional property analysis was applied. A representative sample was categorized into size classes by screening followed by magnetic separation at levels of increased flux density in each size class. In order to assess grindability two samples, reduced at different temperatures, were comminuted in a sequence of rod and ball grinding. Subsequently, the samples were classified using a channel wheel to examine possible iron enrichment in the fines. The reduction degree and stability of metallization were examined by means of wet assay of total and metallic iron. Briquetting experiments of calcined feed and reduced samples were conducted at varied size distribution using a stamp press. The temperature during reduction significantly influences the grindability and metallization of the sample. The sample reduced at 850°C exhibited significantly better grindability and a higher degree of metallization compared to the second sample reduced at a lower temperature. Metallization remained largely intact despite prolonged exposure to air and crushing. Agglomeration with moist samples and binder resulted in stable briquettes. Pressings from briquetting at room temperature with dry material without the use of a binder lacked sufficient stability.
