Abstract

This study is about the effects of process parameters on the adhesion of multi-component injection moulded parts. Four different test specimen types (2mm- , 4mm- tensile bar, shear-specimen, peel-specimen), as well as different material combinations (hard/hard, hard/soft) have been investigated regarding the bonding strength. The variable process parameters were the melt temperature of the second component, the delay time until the injection of the second component, the holding pressure of the second component and the injection rate of the second component. Test specimens were produced at Camo Formen- und Werkzeugbau GmbH in Schwanenstadt and were further tested at the Montanuniversität Leoben. The measured bonding strength was a measure for the adhesion. According to the measurements a higher level of melt temperature of the second component and a shorter delay time had the most positive effect on adhesion. These results can be interpreted by several adhesion theories. In this study most of the results were interpreted using the adhesion theory by Vojuckij. Due to higher molecule chain activity at higher melt temperatures there is a better interdiffusion of each component. Some test specimens showed an increase in adhesion by 146% at higher melt temperatures. The highest increase in adhesion using shorter a delay time was 115%. Furthermore, the analysis of all measured test specimens showed that in more than 66% of the tested specimens a higher melt temperature lead to higher bond strength. A positive effect of a shorter delay time was detected in more than 50% of the investigated test specimens. The other analysed process parameters shown no significant influence on the adhesion. According to the results of this study the main conclusion is that the temperature level at the interfaces of the components has a significant influence on the bond strength of multi-component injection moulded parts.
