Abstract

Today, filter systems are essential in nearly every field of industry, be it the pharmaceutical or the welding industry. The dust, which has to be collected in adequate containers beneath the filter system, has to be discharged at regular intervals. Instead of emptying these containers manually, pneumatic conveying systems are used to transport the solid load to a collecting bin with considerable capacity so as to increase economic efficiency. Considering operating costs, pressure loss is one of the crucial factors regarding an increase in the technology's economical potential. Subsequently a considerable number of engineers have attempted to determine the loss caused by conveying systems with the help of various calculation methods. Pioneers on this subject are Muschelknautz and Barth, whose model was later refined by Stieß and Kraume. The aim of this thesis is to identify the most suitable calculating method by conducting an experiment at the pilot plant erected by Kappa Filter Systems at the site of Hainzl Industry Systems in Linz, Austria. Various calculating methods are tested at the pilot plant and compared to the effectively measured pressure losses, in order to define the most accurate and most practical calculation system. In addition to a detailed outline of the experimental set-up and procedure followed by an interpretation of the measured data, an in-depth analysis of errors and sensitivity is incorporated into the discussion of the practical results. It will be concluded that Muschelknautz and Barth as well as Kraume are the most functional method to calculate pressure losses effectively.
