Abstract

In this master¿s thesis, experimental investigations were carried out to study how geometric obstacles affect the flame propagation of dust-air mixtures. Based on an existing experimental setup at the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology of the Technical University of Leoben, tests were conducted with various blockage ratios and obstacle configurations. Data acquisition was performed purely optically using a high-speed camera and the subsequent data analysis was carried out in MATLAB. Geometric and kinematic parameters such as flame height, width, area, vertical velocity and rate of area change were determined. The results were first evaluated in absolute terms and then normalised to a reference case without obstacles. This normalised evaluation shows that obstacles can both suppress and promote flame propagation. This influence is non-linear with respect to the blockage ratio, while the arrangement and shape of the obstacles also play an additional role to the flame propagation.
