Abstract

Efficient utilization of resources is one of the fundamental requirements to be met in order for a business to be successful and sustainable. In recent years, especially during the financial crisis and its impact on manufacturing companies, this has proven to be all the more valid. Through globalization and the continued expansion of markets, as well as the shortening of innovation cycles and dynamic changes in demands, this challenge has become the key for companies to stay competitive. Therefor the importance and responsibility to effectively plan and execute production has increased. In order to keep up with the growing complexity and ability to control manufacturing processes, different methods and tools have been developed to assist with planning and scheduling. The theoretical part of this thesis summarizes the basics of production planning and scheduling and focuses on the parts relevant to this paper. Terms, concepts and methods are explained which are being used or expanded on in the practical part. Additionally selected approaches to identify characteristics of production control are being described in order to analyze and compare different implementations. In the practical part a closer look is taken at three different production locations of the manufacturing company HOERBIGER Kompressortechnik GmbH. Over time different practices and solutions of planning and scheduling have been established at these locations. These were analyzed in terms of influences from their respective markets, the specifics of their individual production departments as well as the planning process and distribution of tasks and responsibilities. Specific characteristics and drivers for planning effort were identified by which similarities across different plants can be drawn and the beneficial use of specific methods explained. The conclusion of this thesis includes the results and findings of the practical part, knowledge of the competences within the company regarding methods and tools, descriptive characteristics of production departments, specific requirements for planning and scheduling, and the use of certain assisting tools and methods depending on specific circumstances and requirements as well as suggested further analysis of some examined production areas.
