Abstract

The Salinen Austria AG (SAAG) uses above- and below-ground solution mining for brine production. In the above-ground mining the local development, infrastructure (power lines) and topography still limit the degrees of freedom in positioning new borehole probes with vertical wells. Therefore, the SAAG is considering the use of deviated wells. In this work the feasibility of deviated wells will be evaluated. The Salinen Austria AG pays for meters drilled for the drilling operations. In addition to these costs per meter there are additional expenses for drilling, as well as extra charge for unscheduled work because of the problematic geology. Therefore the optimization of the recent drilling processes would cause a reduction of the drilling costs. To optimize the drilling of vertical wells, Casing while Drilling would be one possibility for drilling of the problematic geologic layers and to overcome the problems with borehole stability. Casing while Drilling can be also used for drilling directional wells, but there are restrictions based on the technology. Due to the instability of wellbore the drilling of directional wells for any kind of borehole trajectory is limited. The use of directional drilling assemblies is associated with a high risk for every type of borehole trajectory in the area Römerweg. If the drilling of directional wells could be performed without risk of loosing the directional drilling assembly and maybe also the borehole, it would be possible to drill at one wellsite up to seven boreholes. This master thesis evaluates the different possibilities and presents them in a so called decision matrix.
