Abstract

The trend towards the use of alternative sources of energy in relation to the use of fossil sources of energy has increased globally in the last years. Particularly with energy-intensive production processes the thermal utilization of heat value-rich waste fractions leads to the reduction of the primary fuel inventory. Besides the conservation of primary resources (oil, natural gas and coal) the thermal utilization of heat value-rich waste fractions also contributes to the protection of the environment. For the production of high-quality environmentally friendly alternative fuels a set of quality criteria play, among other things the maximally permissible heavy metal content in the waste fuel, an important role. For the fulfillment of these requirements manufacturers of alternative fuel must avoid the use of heavy metals, like antimony and lead in the production process. For this reason alternative fuel manufacturers should draw special attention to the constant improvement of internal quality assurance concepts with the prior goal of producing high-quality alternative fuels. This paper also deals with the distribution of antimony and lead contained in the input fractions of an alternative fuel production plant. The sampling will be followed by heavy metal analytics to inform about heavy metal contents of the individual input fractions. Based on measurement results, the conception of sort techniques to remove heavy metals from waste stream forms the conclusion of this paper.
